Second: Marketing and Selling
Let’s face it, the vast majority of people who “set up a home based Internet business” fail to make any money. The commonly quoted figure is around 95%. 95% of online businesses fail in their first year.
Why?
In the vast majority of cases it will be because the business owner did not know how to market or sell, OR they do not give sales and marketing enough of their attention. But the real reason why they fail is because they do not go out and acquire the skills and knowledge that are necessary to succeed in today’s online market place.
The Purpose Of Marketing Is To Attract Targeted Prospects.
Did you notice what the headline to this section did NOT say?
It did not say “the purpose of marketing is to sell!”
First things first…
Once you are able to attract a regular flow of targeted prospects, your NEXT job will be to convert those prospects into customers, and THEN cultivate them so that they become REPEAT customers.

What If You Do Not Know How To Market And Sell?
Actually, ANYBODY can learn the basics of these skills in a relatively short amount of time, so don’t worry! The main thing is that you are willing to learn and ready to do what it takes to apply what you learn to your online business.

Another reason why people fail at Internet marketing is because they are unwilling to invest any money into their business. In short, they are not willing to treat their Internet business like a REAL business.
Free is very often a “false economy” because you end up spending a lot more time doing jobs that can be done much more quickly if you pay for the right tools, or pay someone to do the job for you.
Sure, there are a lot of free resources that you can use, but there are also essential tools that you simply MUST invest in if you are to run a serious online business, such as web hosting and autoresponder services.
In short, you simply CAN’T run an Internet business without investing any money.
A lot of people rush into Internet marketing without the proper preparation, and without stopping to think seriously about whether they are really suited for it. So, before going any further, consider whether or not you are willing to invest your time, effort and money in starting a home-based online business.
Ask yourself what you would be willing to give up in order to set up a successful home-based Internet business. If the honest answer is “nothing” then do not proceed any further!
On the other hand, if you are keen to make the sacrifices that will be necessary and dedicate yourself to the cause, then “grasp the nettle” and go ahead!
