How To Run A MySQL Database On Your Webhosting Package
What is MySQL?
The MySQL database system is the most common choice among the several different ones available for web hosting. A MySQL database is a relational database administration system that is established on a scripting language known as SQL (Structured Query Language), that is utilized in adding, removing and amending or altering information on a database.
MySQL operates on every major operating system platform as well as with Linux, UNIX and Windows. It is the main and foremost “open source” (which means it can be downloaded and used by anybody, free of charge) database and a powerful tool used in many websites.
PostgreSQL vs MySQL
In the beginning, as an open source database, MySQL was designed to offer Internet marketers a low end alternative to proprietary databases such as PostgreSQL even while also providing the same value for high traffic database driven sites for web hosting.
Recently, there has been a convergence in what MySQL and PostgreSQL can deliver, although the postgresql vs mysql debate continues to rage among afficionadoes.
Essentially, PostgreSQL was function rich while MySQL had the advantage of speed. However, PostgreSQL has recently got faster while MySQL has also developed advanced functionality to rival PostgreSQL. For a more detailed account of how the two systems compare, see Eweek.com’s PostgreSQL-vs-MySQL article.
The Benefits of MySQL
One of the benefits of MySQL for free and low cost webhosting companies is that it is free to add to their portfolio of services because it is open source. That is why it has become the leading option for free web hosting in database advancement in data driven sites, for example.
The MySQL database helps web hosting that makes and supports databases to drive content sites such as blogs, social media, sales or e-commerce sites. It can also be used to track users, discussion threads and settings.
Many websites that make use of MySQL and use a scripting language such as PHP which helps availability of information from the database. To take advantage of MySQL web hosting, you do not need to have programming knowledge though some basic understanding does help.
There is a package management system that Linux distributions have that downloads and puts in MySQL pretty easily. Here, all you need is a little configuration tweaking to for security and optimizing settings. These will be determined by the type of data you need to have on the database being installed. A great number of web hosting sites by now have set up MySQL databases and PHP for the users of their web server.
Yet for those who might not have the MySQL database already set up will find that setting up is very easy. All you need to do is request for information from your web host including a username and password that you will use to access these services. MySQL databases being very popular with website hosting providers has made it such that it is quite easy to access tutorials, support, and scripts easily from a number of internet sources.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the installation of a MySQL database on to a web server consists of five easy steps. The initial thing to do is choose the version to install, download it, set up the application, do post installation tests and install which comprises the conveying of passwords. Although it may seem a bit technical, setting up MySQL database on your webhosting package is not as hard as many people think it is.
The Features You Can Expect On A Website Hosting Provider
Website hosting is one the most important financial today’s businesses can make. There are some things to keep in mind while choosing website hosting services.
The options offered are somewhat different from company to company. All companies should offer a few that are key. It is vital to the growth of a business that these are provided. Businesses, especially new ones, can get into financial difficulty otherwise.
Security
One of the most important features to consider is security. All types of sensitive information are kept by businesses. Clients count on the business to keep this information private. They could sue the business if this falls into the wrong hands. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes today. As the popularity of the internet increases, it does too. There are numerous hackers on the web today. New viruses and Trojans are created every day. It is important that anti-virus software, a firewall, and encryption services are offered by the provider.
Reliability
Next, reliability must be a consideration. It is a must that businesses provide reliability and convenience to their clients. It is also a must that the hosting provider does the same for the business. If the website has poor performance and is constantly crashing, clients and profit will be lost. One of the most common causes of lost money is downtime. Unlimited bandwidth and unlimited server space should be offered by the hosting provider. This allows the company to grow as needed. If the volume of traffic suddenly increases and the business does not have these features, it will suffer greatly.
Support
Another important feature is support. Technical support should be provided by phone 24/7. Certain web hosting providers may charge a fee for this. Others do not, but offer it only through email or web forums. This is generally offered by a partially managed hosting service for free. On-site technical support that is free should be provided by a fully managed service. None of the hosting providers can guarantee problems will not occur. It is important to get reliable, effective, and quick support if something does happen. To research providers and these three features, customer reviews prove to be one of the best ways.
Partial or Full Management
There are a few considerations when deciding between a partially managed or fully managed service. A fully managed service will attend to all administrative tasks. This enables the business to spend additional time on business oriented tasks. A partially managed service does not offer this. The business must manage its own tasks such as updates and maintaining the web server.
Other Important Website Hosting Provider Features
Other important features to look for included no hidden fees, a money back guarantee, unlimited domains, and email services. Ensure that unlimited email addresses, spam protection, auto responders, and email forwarding are included in the email services. An additional feature to be considered by retail sites is e-commerce integration. It is vital that this type of website have an online transaction system and shopping cart integration.
Thorough research should be done on all hosting providers. It is important to know what is being offered at what price. Determining exactly what the business’s needs are is also important. Website hosting provider companies can be researched through many sources. The previously mentioned customer reviews and blogs are good for this. Great feedback comes from those who have done business with that company.

Weebly Review: Could the age of the viable free website be upon us?
Could the age of the viable free website be upon us?
Are you looking for a free website that looks good, has no annoying ads on it and has a back office suite that is beautiful to work with?
I think you might like the look of http://www.weebly.com/
I have just been playing with it and feel like a boy in a sweetshop!
The site cleanly designed, with a fresh appearance and a nice layout that makes it very easy to work with.
It also comes with a lot of cool features.
Want to add a new paragraph with a photo top left? Just drag and drop the appropriate icon into place. Want to work with HTML, you can if you like, but you don’t have to.
At the top of the page a series of tabs lead you to the various building blocks to help you construct your website. The tabs are:
- Elements
- Designs
- Pages
- Settings
Elements is sub-divided into
- Basics
- Multimedia
- Revenue (Google Adsense)
- More.
You can keep your website completely free by having weebly host it:
http://www.YOURSITENAMEHERE.weebly.com
Or you can buy a domain name and point it at your website.
There are no annoying ads on your site, EXCEPT for a Weebly footer.
You can easily add Google Adsense and share the revenue 50%-50% with Weebly.
There are upgrade options.
When you log back in, your current sites are easy to find, plus there is a clear “To Do List” to take you through your website building tasks.
Right now they are beta testing a set of features that allows any Weebly user to customize their theme, and are looking for users who know a bit of HTML/CSS and would be willing to spend a little time to test out the new features.
This resource seems idealy suited for testing out niche sites…
But note, you can build a maximum of TWO free websites. After that you have to pay – but the rates are very good, AND you can pay by PayPal – always a good option as far as I’m concerned.
- 6 Months = $4.58/month
- 1 Year = $3.99/month
- 2 Years = $2.99/month
One you upgrade to a paid account you can have up to 10 websites per account and get some extra features thrown in too, such as:
- Password-protected pages
- Remove or Customize Weebly footer
- 100 MB file uploads
- Audio player
- Premium Support
So is Weebly reliable, can you expect 99.5% uptime?
I don’t know. They suffered a major outage in June 2008, when three, or possibly even FOUR of the Seagate hard-drives on the storage system busted. But “drastic measures” (like replacing all 15 of their hard-drives) were taken “to make sure this never happens again”.
Since Weebly’s stated aim is to be the most reliable and best free web site creation service on the Internet, let’s hope they have better luck with their new storage system.
Verdict: Worth trying for small narrowly focused niche websites, or fun sites…
Question: Does the free version of Weebly do anything that a free blog platform could not do as well or better?
Here’s a 3 minute video demo, which may answer that question for you:
