How To Start A Free Podcast In Three Easy-To-Do Step
If you are trying to promote a business website you may already have tried PPC, SEO, article marketing, traffic exchanges, banner ads and so on. If the results have not been as good as you hoped you may still be wondering how you can promote your website more effectively and start seeking out some other marketing techniques.
Occasionally, video marketing via YouTube is mentioned, but it is not often that someone suggests that you start your own free podcast. The perception seems to be that it is difficult to do, yet today it has never been easier to set up your own podcast and create a series of 5-15 minute audio recordings that you can post on Itunes and also on your website.
Once you have a podcast on Itunes people will be able to find your programmes, listen to them and if they like them, they will subscribe to your podcast. They will be able to download your podcasts from iTunes each time you produce a new recording.
Simply put, making a podcast and posting it on iTunes is a good way to get the word out about your business while providing a free service to people in your target market – people who use iTunes every day.
The beauty of it is that it is easy to do! Here’s how to set up your own podcast in a few easy steps:
1. Create Your Podcast Use the sound recording software on your computer to create your podcast content. If you use Windows you can record on Sound Recorder; if you have a Mac you can use Garageband.
Simply choose a topic relating to your business, such as one of your products or services, and talk about the need that it fills or the problem that it solves for your prospective customers, focusing on a specific point in each podcast. If you already write articles to promote your website, then you could simply adapt your articles and create each podcast around an article – just hit the record button and read the article out loud. Add an few introductory and closing comments and mention your website address each time. That’s it!
2. Hosting Services For Podcasters Open an account with a podcast host and you will be able to store your podcasts on it. This makes more sense than hosting your podcasts on your website as audio files require quite a lot of storage space and as your audience grows you will need a lot of bandwidth; podcast hosting sites are specifically designed to handle those issues for you.
Start off with a free or low-cost account and think about upgrading when you start to get a good following for your podcast. Popular podcast hosting services include Libsyn, Podbean, HipCast, GoDaddy, OurMedia, Odeo Studio. Personally, I use Podbean.com and started off with a free account which is easy to set up and use.
3. Upload To iTunes After you have recorded a couple of shows and have opened an account with a podcasting host your next step will be to post your show on iTunes. This is also easy to do.
Open iTunes and then click on iTunes Store. When the store opens you will see a bar at the top of the browser with “Podcasts” in the middle of the bar. Click on “Podcasts” and on the new page you will see a “Podcasts – PODCAST QUICK LINKS” menu column on the right hand side. Click on “Submit a Podcast” and you’ll be taken to a new page with a field called “Podcast Feed URL”. The podcast feed will be in the admin area of your podcasting host site. In the case of Podbean, it is in the “My Profile” section. Copy the feed and paste it into the iTunes “Podcast Feed URL” field and click “Continue” to go through the submission process.
Provided there are no unforeseen hitches iTunes will soon start showing your podcast and you can now consider yourself to be “in business”!
It is that easy.

Can A Complete Internet Newbie Start A Successful Online Business Podcast?
Perhaps the question in the title that heads this article seems a bit weird. After all, you would imagine that a prerequisite for someone planning to start a free Internet marketing podcast would be to have a lot of Internet business experience, right?
Actually, no, not necessarily! And here’s why.
Of course, it would be a definite asset to your business podcast if you already have a lot of experience as a successful Internet marketer and are planning to use your podcast as part of a training package for your subscribers. However, even if you lack those credentials there is no reason why you cannot make a successful podcast around the theme of Internet marketing. Both the expert and the beginner can present useful information about Internet marketing to an interested audience. Each is able to provide a helpful and enjoyable online business podcast from his or her own perspective.
While experienced Internet marketers will be able to use their expertise in their podcasts, inexperienced Internet marketers will be able to use their LACK of experience as the starting point for the themes of their podcasts and use the podcast as a medium of exploration to try and fill in the gaps in their knowledge. The experienced Internet marketing podcaster is like your teacher or coach whereas the inexperienced newbie is like a friend or companion.
The Podcaster As Teacher
This is the most common format for business podcasting. The podcaster-as-teacher is someone who comes over as having a lot of experience of Internet marketing and who is willing to share that experience with you to help you move forward with your own online business. He is the expert and we draw upon his knowledge to improve our own Internet marketing performance.
The podcaster as teacher offers us a lot of free podcast content, but will very likely also offer a paid subscription upgrade where we can access much more detailed information.
The Podcaster As Learner
The newbie Internet marketing podcaster is more like a fellow-learner, someone who is not afraid to ask the “dumb questions” and who can share with you every mistake, blunder and new discovery and have a lot of fun while learning the ropes.
A business podcast hosted by an Internet marketing newbie would ideally adopt a “heuristic” approach to its material – that is, the podcaster would “learn through experience”, finding what works and what doesn’t by trial and error.
Build Your Reputation As An Internet Business Podcaster
For the newbie, it is probably too early to try and add an upgrade option to the free podcast because you are clearly not in any position to brand yourself as an expert just yet.
What you can do, however, is seek out some successful Internet marketers who are experts in their field and try to set up an interview with each of them using Skype.
You can lead up to this by joining some online business forums and getting to know the established marketers who use the forums. Then, when you feel you are ready, send them a private message on the forum asking if they would be interested in being interviewed for your podcast.
This will add some great content to your podcast, and help to build your own reputation as well.
After you have been podcasting for about a year you should have gained enough experience of Internet marketing to move you well beyond the “newbie” stage; you will be well on your way to branding yourself as an expert in the field. Your subscribers are now likely to be a mixture of faithful followers and a new generation of newbies.
You will also notice that you are beginning to speak with more authority based on your accumulated experience.
Keep podcasting for another year and during that time start developing some detailed training courses that you can launch as special upgrade services as you move into your third year of podcasting. You will now have established yourself as an expert Internet business podcaster.
Ignorance Is Bliss
So, if you are an Internet marketing newbie and are looking for a good way to start “building your brand”, I suggest that you think about setting up a free podcast related to your Internet business niche and podcast about all the Internet marketing techniques that you don’t know about! You will discover that Internet marketing “ignorance” can be transformed into free podcasting “bliss”!

How To Create And Upload A Digital Audio Recording
Are you an Internet marketer who is interested in finding new ways to reach your target market?

Creating a basic digital audio recording is no longer a difficult or costly enterprise.
Sound Recording Software
Garageband
If you are one of those lucky people who owns a Mac OSX, you already have all the equipment you need right on your computer!
Look for the Garageband guitar icon on your icon dock or in your applications folder. Simply click it to open the Garageband program and off you go! Garageband is a complete recording studio with multi-tracking so you can create sophisticated, professional sounding audio recordings right on your computer with no extra equipment.
Sound Recorder
For Windows users, there is Sound Recorder, has been included as part of the Windows bundle going back to Windows 95, but you will need to use an external microphone to record your sound files.
External Microphone or Digital Audio Recorder
Actually, whether you use Sound Recorder, GarageBand, or another audio recording software program, I would recommend that you invest in a good quality microphone anyway, or even a portable digital audio recording device such as Roland’s Edirol R-09. (Check my Edirol R-09 review for a detailed look at this device.)
A portable digital audio recorder will give you much more flexibility as to where you make your recordings. Because you can put it in your bag or even your jacket pocket you suddenly find yourself able to do impromptu recordings of people you meet or of live events while out and about. You can arrange to interview people without having to persuade them to come to your room and huddle in front of your computer.
Uploading Your Digital Audio Recording
Files can be uploaded from a digital audio recorder to a Mac and imported to Garageband. With Windows you might want to use Roland’s Cakewalk “pyro Audio Creator LE” software to upload and manage your sound files.
What To Talk About?
For the purposes of promoting your website, you do not need to worry about producing a slick audio programme. A five-to-ten minute audio recording will be plenty long enough. If you do not know what you can talk about, go over some of the articles or blog posts you have published and choose some of the best quality ones and simply record yourself reading one of them out loud. Write a small introduction and conclusion suitable for an audio recording and tag them to the start and finish of the article.
You may find, as you read the article, that some parts of it sound strange or unnatural in a “spoken word” format. So, modify those parts of the article and make another recording.
Another idea is to write some good copy for your “About Me” page and then make a recorded version of it.
Once you are more confident, you can start writing articles specifically for audio, and even try ad-libbing a recording or two. Ad-lib recordings probably work best when you have someone to interview as it usually feels more natural when you react spontaneously to someone else’s comments than when you are on your own and trying to chat “naturally” to your computer screen!
Uploading Your Audio Recording
Once you have produced your audio file you can easily upload it to the Internet via a free online service such as SoundCloud.com – and if you are in a hurry, you can record directly onto SoundCloud. You can then copy some code from their site and paste it into an article on your website or blog to make your recording available to your site visitors.
Now that you have got this far you may find that you are keen to go all the way and set up your own free podcast service and publish it on iTunes.
Once you discover how easy it is to make your own audio recordings you may want to go to the next step and set up your own free podcasting service and publish it on iTunes.
Whatever you choose to do, making good quality digital audio recordings a part of your online marketing strategy makes sense and is easy to implement. You probably have most of the equipment you need at your fingertips already.
