Yes folks, here's the proof you've been waiting for! EyeEarn has reached Japan! You can just about see the banner through the tinted rear window of our car.

Er, yes, that's me in the middle distance, on the steps of our local shrine, with my EyeEarn t-shirt on, on a freezing January afternoon. It was a difficult shot to get a bit of the car, the EyeEarn banner, my mug AND a Japanese shrine gate all fitted into a picture that could be cropped and uploaded to the SFI site.

Being a bit of a literary nut, I've just written a 100 word book review of W. F. and E. S. Freidman's The Shakespearean Ciphers Examined. The Friedmans were two of America's leading cryptologists during the first half of the 20th century. They also had an interest in the assertion that Francis Bacon was the real writer of the Shakespeare plays and that he had inserted a cyper or series of cyphers in them which revealed the true identity of the writer. Their book, published in 1957, offers a point-by-point refutation of the objective validity of the various hypotheses.

Towards the end of the book the Friedmans comment that,

"..one may well wonder if reasoned argument is
going to carry much weight with investigators who are so
constantly moved by the providential ordering of the merely
coincidental."

- (p. 284)

Today's feature article happens to be related to the speculations of the "anti-Stratfordians" because it is about the huge influence which charades, bogus ideas and pretended knowledge have over the lives of millions of people in the world today and, I guess, throughout the whole of human history. If these charades have no influence, then,

"Why do otherwise intelligent individuals form seething masses of idiocy when they engage in collective action?"

One reason why we are so prone to suffer from the delusions of others is probably because we lead insufficiently purposeful lives of our own. Without any big goals and with no clear sense of direction, we are vulnerable to the influence of the strong-minded charlatan who will fill the gap in our minds with compelling and seemingly plausible ideas of his own. And because we have not developed any strong purpose-driven habits of our own, the apparent plausibility of imposture appears in our addled brains as a great edifice of Truth, backed by convincing proof and impressive reasoning, often supported by some evident truth, or gaps in the historical record.

(Shakespeare was not an aristocrat or courtier [evident truth], so how could he have had access to the knowledge that is evident in the plays written under his name? [gap in the historical record]). The gap is an open door for imposture to enter in. Mind the gap!

It is also true, in the words of Niels Bohr, that,

"The opposite of one great truth is another great truth."

There are always at least two sides to every question. What each side rules in, the other can rule out. Life is a dialectic and you are one of the players in the argument, like a chess player in an open ended game.

The moves you make, the positions you take, will always be met with some kind of counter argument or counter force. If you do not have clear goals and a strong sense of purpose, AND a clear awareness of what is really going on (avoiding the delusions of the masses) you may come under the influence of stronger player, and find yourself both checked and mated. Every move must have a purpose.

Charades

I recently received an e-mail from Wayne Holt of Houston, TX. It stated, in part:

"I am stunned by the indifference to practical living skills that so many in our society exhibit. How can so many be so wrong for so long, and still the charade continues? It's as if we deliberately dove off a building laughing and were miraculously saved by an awning. At times, I'm tempted to believe we can't fatally harm ourselves even if we try with all our might."

Mr. Holt gives us a lot to think about. I believe the reason so many can be so wrong for so long - without seeing through the charades (plural, not singular) that are served up to them day in and day out - is because conventional wisdom, myths, and fairytales tend to gain strength with age. After all, if something has been around for a long time, it must be true. Right?

Not so fast. What really happens is that when a preposterous tale - or even an outright lie - is repeated often enough, it acquires "legs." Meaning it becomes self-sustaining. And if it attracts enough adherents, it spreads exponentially. This is how dogma evolves into "fact." Through repetition, a lie can be transformed into truth, and often is. The dictionary defines charade as "a blatant pretense or deception." Which means that most of what we see and hear are charades. In the 1963 classic film Charade, Regina Lampert (Audrey Hepburn) asks Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) why people lie. Joshua answers, "Usually it's because they want something. They are afraid the truth won't get it for them."

Why do otherwise intelligent individuals form seething masses of idiocy when they engage in collective action? Why do financially sensible people jump lemming-like into hare-brained speculative frenzies--only to jump broker-like out of windows when their fantasies dissolve?

As the Republican and Democratic caucuses so clearly demonstrate, politicians are a great example of relentless purveyors of charades... constantly calling for increases in the "minimum wage" (even though it affects only two percent of the population)... incessantly babbling about Social Security "reform" (even though Social Security is a pyramid scam that is mathematically impossible to "fix")... acting as though they are serious about putting an end to illegal immigration (even though every rational adult recognizes that it is years too late to do anything about it).

What do politicians hope to gain from such charades? The same things they are always after: First, our votes. Second, as a result of our votes, power. Third, adulation. And fourth, the congressional perks that allow them to live like multimillionaires.

How, Mr. Holt wonders, is it possible for the charades to continue? Because just as people get the governments they deserve, they also get the charades they deserve - and want. People love to be deluded. It feels so warm and fuzzy compared to the harshness of reality.

But what about Mr. Holt's speculation that we are somehow immune to the consequences of the self-destructive tendencies so many of us exhibit? Would that it were so, but the evidence suggests that we irreversibly damage ourselves all the time. In case you hadn't noticed, the Greek and Roman Empires are not around anymore. Neither is the Soviet Union. All of them fell under the weight of their own charades.

It is therefore not surprising that the sun is rapidly setting on Western civilization. We continue to accept the charade that freedom and equality can coexist... The charade that everything in life is relative and that there is no such thing as right and wrong... The charade that the most heinous criminals - even those from other countries who are here illegally - have the same rights as law-abiding citizens.

All noble thoughts, I guess. But, unfortunately, not good for maintaining a civilization. For better or for worse, civilization cannot exist without a generally accepted code of conduct. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.



Make no mistake about it, the resilience of the human race is remarkable. We have survived the Dark Ages, tyrants, slavery, and worse. But I do not agree that there is always an awning to catch us. For example, the six million Jews who bought into the charade that Germany was a safe and cultured nation - and that Adolf Hitler was a harmless nutcase - fell through the awning and landed in the gas chambers.

In closing, I am reminded of the tiniest of all mammals, the shrew, which weighs less than a dime. The shrew is a voracious eater who will not hesitate to devour other shrews. And when it's hungry enough, and there's no other prey around, it is capable of eating itself to death - literally - beginning with its own tail.

I believe that if a person tries hard enough, like the shrew, he can fatally harm himself. Man, of course, does not engage in self-cannibalism. Instead, he relies on the charade. Kind of analogous to a person who commits suicide by forcing the police to kill him.

I say forget about relying on the awning to save you. Focus, instead, on trying not to fall. And a good way to do that is to monitor your personal reality so you avoid buying into too many charades. If you are too wrong too often, for too long - if you continue to buy into the charades promulgated by government, Madison Avenue, and the media - sooner or later, the awning won't be there to catch you.

When I recently saw the President of the Pay Day Lender's Association on TV the other day lecturing the viewing audience to "Never borrow more than you can repay in a short period," I got sick to my stomach. I knew he was smelling blood!

He was clearly reacting to the increased desperation of the middle class American worker, falling further behind because of stagnant wages, rapidly rising mortage, gasoline and health care costs.

If you don't take action to protect yourself and your family, now; from this increasingly predatory economy we live in; you will go right into bankruptcy, foreclosure or both, along with millions of your fellow middle class Americans.

Most of you are letting the government take 30-50% of your hard earned income in taxes every day, while granting the corporations and the wealthy ever more unconscionable and unfair taxbreaks.

Exxon/Mobile makes $9 Billion in profits in 1 quarter and 1/2 million middle class families will go bankrupt this year, because they do not have $300/mo more income, which according to a Harvard researcher, Elizabeth Warren, is all that is needed for them to avoid bankruptcy!

Kicking Off 2008 With ETR: Rev Up Your Sales With a Google AdWords Campaign

You’d been hearing all about how great Google AdWords is for driving traffic to a business’s website, and you were finally ready to get in on the action. So you set up your first online marketing campaign. But while you’re starting to see results, they just aren’t what you expected… and you’re not sure what to do next.

You did everything right. You created your campaign complete with your first Ad Group, the all-important element that holds your keywords and your text ads. You applied your budget. And you were ready to kick back and let the traffic roll in.

I mean, this is AdWords, right? The king of all pay-per-click (PPC) search programs! So… where’s all the traffic? Where’re all the sales? Is anyone out there? Is this thing on?

Don’t panic. The traffic is out there, and so are the sales. Google isn’t the king for nothing. Appease the king and he’ll share his gold. And I’m here to show you how to appease him. Apply the following techniques, and you’ll see a big boost in your AdWords results.

Let’s start by tweaking the most important element of your AdWords campaign.

Your Keywords

When you think of keywords, you probably think "More, more, more!" But have you ever considered less?

Many marketers just starting out in PPC advertising make the mistake of cramming all the keywords they can think of into one Ad Group. Many times, this results in an Ad Group that isn’t as targeted as it could be.

Let’s say you run a website that’s all about dogs. You may have a keyword list that includes terms like:

• Dog training


• Dog breeds


• Healthy dog food


• Best dog toys

By including all these keywords in one Ad Group, you dilute the focus of that Ad Group.

Sure, the words are all related to dogs. But a person searching for information on dog training is not necessarily the same person who is looking for places to buy healthy dog food.

But what if you created an Ad Group for each of these different keywords? Instead of one diluted Ad Group, you now have four extremely targeted Ad Groups. And now you can expand upon each of these topics and really drill down to the various terms people would use to search for "dog training" (how to train my dog, dog training tips, best dog training information) or "healthy dog food" (healthy dog food recipes, healthy dry dog food, healthy dog food brands).

The next step is to write targeted ad text for each of your new Ad Groups.

Your Ad Text

Now that you’re targeting potential customers interested in your valuable dog training tips, how do you encourage them to click through to your website? Why, with targeted and compelling ad text of course!

Easier said than done, I know. But there are several things you can do to stand out amongst your competitors and boost your click-through rate (CTR).

1. Use your keywords in your ad text - especially your headline. Keywords in your ad text that match what was searched show up as bold in your ad and boost your relevancy.


2. Offer something free or promote a sale. Everyone likes free stuff and bargains.


3. Use symbols or vary your punctuation where applicable. Odd punctuation can catch a searcher’s eye and make them click your ad over your competitors’.

Play with these techniques to find what works best. Test like crazy. And since you can write several versions of your text ads for each Ad Group, let Google rotate them and optimize the best ads for the best results.

Remember, relevancy is the most important factor in search engine marketing. Whatever you do, make sure your ad text speaks to the keywords you’re bidding on.

Once your new ads are pulling the clicks of your dreams, now you’d better convert them with…

Your Landing Pages

So your "dog training" keywords trigger your targeted "dog training" text ads, which drive visitors to your … home page? But your home page talks about dog training and different dog breeds and dog food and dog toys and… your visitors are overwhelmed and they leave.

If you make your visitors work too hard to find what they’re looking for, you’ll lose them.

Create unique landing pages specific to each Ad Group. The more relevant your landing pages are to your ad text, the better your conversions will be - whether they be sign-ups, leads, or sales.

Once visitors click on your "dog training" ad, they should arrive at a page that tells them all about your amazing dog training products and/or services. Want them to sign up for a monthly newsletter about dog training advice? Tell them what they’ll learn by subscribing.

Do the same for dog food. Do you sell an e-book about healthy dog food… or about the products that were involved in the wheat gluten scare? Focus your landing page solely on selling that e-book, and make it as relevant as possible to the keywords you’re bidding on and the ad text you’ve written.

Using these techniques to tweak your AdWords campaign will not only rev up your results, it will also boost your AdWords Quality Score, resulting in a lower cost per click (CPC). Lower CPC means more clicks for your money… which ultimately means more sales.

You can’t lose. So start testing now to make 2008 a great year for your online business!

Making your New Year's resolutions stick takes more than just writing a vague list of things you'd like to achieve, like "Lose weight", "Work harder", "Study more", "Eat fewer pork pies", "Make more money"...

You've gotta be more precise than that, and you'll need to work on your resolutions every day. Like, EVERY day.

Okay, in a busy life working on ALL your resolutions EVERY day may be too tough a call. In this excellent article, David Cross recommends that you make one extra and VERY IMPORTANT META-RESOLUTION, i.e. a resolution about your resolutions:

Promise to move at least one of your goals closer to success each and every day in 2008.

"New Year resolutions are a waste of time," my dad, a down-to-earth plumber in Northern England, always said. "Fads. Like diets. I never follow them so I never make them." Instead, he was an advocate of quiet self-reflection at church, while watching cricket on a Sunday afternoon, or over a pint of his famous homebrewed beer. (Religion and homebrew coexisted quite happily in our home, and my dad's in-depth theological arguments over a pint were famous with pub and churchgoers alike.)

Well, I don't agree with my dad. In my opinion, making New Year's resolutions is only a waste of time if, like my dad, you really don't intend to follow through on them. But if you honestly want to achieve your goals, there's one resolution you can make right now that will help you do it. I've made it myself every year for the past 21 years... and it's brought me great success.

Let me explain...

I read a lot of "success" books years back, and figured out that if I wanted to be successful it was unlikely to happen by chance. I'd come to realize that many people who appeared to have experienced "sudden" or "overnight" success had, in fact, been laboring away quietly for many years.

I'd also learned that success isn't something you arrive at, like a place, and then feel "Been there, done that. I'm successful now. The End." Success is more of a continuous process. A habit.

Which all sounds like enough theory to make my dad reach for his Bible... or pint glass!

But it's easy to put that theory into practice.

What I'm suggesting is that you resolve to move at least one of your goals closer to success each and every day in 2008. It could be a business goal or a personal goal. It could be significant or small. It could be a goal that you feel you have to achieve or a goal that will simply make you happy.

Let's say you want to start an online business... but you haven't been able to get it off the ground. Or maybe you already have an online business, but it just isn't profitable. If you put my resolution into practice, I can practically guarantee that your online business will succeed in 2008.

For example, every online businessperson would like to rule the search engines. That doesn't happen overnight. But you CAN rule the search engines for your niche keywords and content. All you have to do is make consistent, incremental improvements in your search engine marketing techniques.

Would you like to bring in more qualified e-mail leads? You can start today by learning how to create a Google AdWords ad and how to optimize your landing pages. Once you start applying this newfound knowledge, you can bring in dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of names every day.

How are your copywriting skills? Are there new marketing techniques you'd like to try? Don't let "being busy" prevent you from doing the things - even the unpleasant things - that will help you make progress toward your goal.

One of my early mentors, David Mousley (who became my best friend), had a great saying: "See the job. Do the job. Avoid the misery." That's a good mantra for success, especially if you catch yourself putting off the more onerous tasks... though you know they need to be done. It could be phone calls you keep delaying, people you avoid meeting, or changes you just can't force yourself to make.

If you do something each and every day to move your online business forward, you will see results. It may mean you need to develop new ideas or contacts. But you can do it gradually, one day at a time.

Adopting this habit can actually get you over some seemingly insurmountable hurdles.

In 1994, for example, I was having a really bad year. Some days were so awful, it took all the effort I could muster just to get out of bed in the morning. But, tough as it was, I stuck to my resolution... even when I wanted to give up. In fact, knowing that all I had to do was take one small step to move one of my personal or professional goals forward helped pull me through.

During this time, I was in the process of writing my first book, The Marketing Survival Handbook. And every day, the first thing I'd do was something to push ahead with that book. I didn't always feel like it, but I'd do something. I'd do a little research, write a few pages, interview a marketer.

Every day, I asked myself "What is one thing I can do today on this book?" And I did it. It didn't matter if I spent 10 minutes dashing off a few paragraphs... or if I sat in a meeting for two hours. All those minutes and hours and actions added up to a book I was proud of. By the end of the year, the book was at the printer. And it sold out the following year.

Adopt the habit of making a little progress toward your goals each day and you can accomplish practically anything... even when the going gets tough.

The past year was great for me. I enjoyed watching our four children start to grow up, and I fulfilled a longtime dream of owning a small farm. Professionally, a highlight was working with the team at ETR on the Internet Money Club.

2008 promises to be another great year. Once again, I'll be moving toward the achievement of my goals, one day at a time.
