I’m a British bloke who is attempting to live a quiet life in Hiroshima, Japan, with my wife and daughter, something my daughter doesn’t seem to realize…

How Did I End Up In Japan?

After I graduated from the University of York, with a degree in Politics and English Literature in 1985 and with no intention of getting a “career”, I spent several years teaching English in England, Italy, Germany and Japan.

I would have been happy to settle in Italy, but I had always been interested in Japan – also, I had heard that Japanese language schools paid well – so I got a job in Hiroshima as an English teacher and had a great time. After spending a couple of years back in England, I returned to Japan in 1999 and have been here ever since!

How I Got Started On The Internet…

It all started back in 2001 or so when I set up a basic HTML website and began writing about how to play Japanese mahjong. Next, I added some Japanese mahjong sets, comics and other Japan-related goods and things took off from there. As my confidence grew, I added to the range of products and my sales continued to increase.

You can check out one of my old HTML websites at http://japanese-mahjong.com – it’s not very pretty, but it certainly is effective. Type “Japanese mahjong sets” into Google and you’ll see that my websites and related pages pretty much dominate the first page of Google for that keyword phrase.

Actually, that only happened after I’d found a trustworthy group of expert Internet marketing mentors who taught me HOW to “dominate your niche”, as I’ll explain in a moment…

I Move Into Affiliate Marketing

In 2007 I started to look at Internet affiliate marketing as a way to make money online without having to pack and ship goods. I found a business that offered “multiple levels of online income”. I was pretty sure I could make it work, after all I had several years’ experience selling Japanese games to customers all over the word, right??

… Totally wrong!

I had to learn a whole new set of marketing skills, and was suddenly “investing” a large chunk of the profit from my games business into my new Internet affiliate marketing business and not seeing any sales, let alone profits… month after month…

I’d been set up with a “plug in profit” style of website… But I increasingly felt as if I’d simply been SET UP by the owner… I wasn’t only me. I found out there were DOZENS of people for whom the promise of “multiple streams of income” had resulted in “multiple streams of expenses”…

Yet, I also knew that some people were making very good money indeed. I realized I had some learning to do if I was to become one of the Internet marketing winners…

Learn From Your Mistakes & Never Give Up!

Towards the end of 2007 a small network of successful Internet marketers (Ken Troyer, Cyn Minnaar, Jeff Casmer, Jeff Schuman, Suzanne Morrison) got together to form the Affiliate Power Group.

They were offering lifetime memberships at heavily discounted rates so I jumped on board finally began to get some seriously good advice about where I was going wrong and what to do about it.

I committed the next couple of years to turning around my affiliate marketing business and learning how to start making serious money on the Internet…

I wouldn’t say I’m there yet, but after a lot of remedial work I am out of the woods and making money with affiliate marketing as well as with my games business. Even better, I’m using what I’ve learned from the Affiliate Power Group to improve my games business as well, so I’d like to say right here,

Why I’m Different…

My experience has taught me a lot about what to do and what NOT to do when starting an online business, whether you want to sell your own products, or sell other people’s products or a mixture of both.
